Watersley Sports & Talent Park is an internationally-oriented residential campus providing accommodation for up to 300 top-level sportspeople from the Netherlands and abroad. You can stay at the park as part of a team or as an individual, and you will be living at a very convenient distance to all the top sports facilities that this region offers.
The Sportzone Limburg sports centre and an exciting city environment are easily accessible, as are a wide range of educational institutes. This makes Watersley Sports & Talent Park the ideal residence while you develop all your talents.
The ambition is for knowledge institutions, the business world, government bodies, and sportsmen and women to reach the top together. This gives rise to better sports performance – including performance at elite level – as well as optimum talent development and new knowledge.
Watersley Sports and Talent Park supports this development into a region for top-level sport through the creation of a residential campus for this target group: a campus on which residence, education, work, and leisure are all connected with each other, allowing the emergence of a ‘lively’ top-level sports community.
The Watersley Sports & Talent Park grounds are part of a rural area located in the immediate vicinity of the Sittard-Geleen urban zone. This area’s rich history dates back to the 16th century.
The name ‘Watersley’ honours the park’s unique location, as it means ‘the place where water is collected’ and refers to the natural basin at the foot of the local Kollenberg hill.
The country home Huis Watersley was built in 1752 as a hunting lodge for the noble Loyens-Delhougne family. Later, in 1876, it became a monastery for a German congregation of the Order of Friars Minor. In 1967 the country estate came into the hands of Stichting Pergamijn, a foundation that provides assistance to people with intellectual disabilities. Huis Watersley has been a nationally listed building since 1967.
Having served as a castle, monastery, and care centre, it is now a peaceful environment where young, ambitious sportspeople can develop their talents. The 29-hectare park-like estate is ideally located in the middle of the Meuse-Rhine Euregio in an area known for its outstanding cycling routes, both flat and hilly, some of which also lead to Belgium and Germany.
Just three kilometres as the crow flies from Watersley Sports & Talent Park, the Sportzone Limburg sports centre offers an outstanding sporting environment focusing on professional infrastructure and the structural development of talents. This tailoring is ideal for young people wanting to combine their sporting ambitions with their studies or career. The versatile environment offers a wide range of sports facilities, including a safe cycling environment and an athletics track, as well as the Topsport Expertise & Innovation Centre, which offers professional support to sportspeople at the highest level.
Looking forward/continuing to develop
In the coming years, this region will see further sustainable development and redevelopment. Nevertheless, the peace and relaxation the park offers will be maintained by working with the available materials and opportunities in a sustainable and innovative way, and by strengthening the connection between this breeding ground for talented sportspeople and the community of Sittard which has been this estate’s home for centuries.
